    Description

An amazing piece of WWII military history with unique Marine Corps provenance.  The owner of these notes, Marine Corps Veteran stamped his name, location and the date he received them on three of the bills during the battle for Shima Island, off Okinawa on April 1, 1945.
The airfields on Ie Shima were built by the Japanese prior to the American invasion and subsequent
    Battle of Okinawa
in April 1945. It was seized by elements of the
    United States Army
    77th Infantry Division
after intermittent bombardment of the island by the
    United States Navy
    Fifth Fleet
from 25 March through 16 April when the invasion of the island commenced. The island was not declared secure until 24 April.”
He also wrote in pencil the US equivalent value on two of the other notes.
Due to the near mint condition of these notes, he clearly never had the opportunity to spend them, most likely because the war ended a few months later.
These 6 notes are an almost complete collection of the series 100 issue, missing only the 100 yen note and would make an amazing addition to any WWII or Marine Corps collection.
